POSITION PURPOSE

We are looking for an experienced and passionate leader that will contribute to the growth of Sustainalytics’ market positioning as a leading provider of second-party opinions for sustainable bond frameworks. Based out of Amsterdam, the candidate will oversee our second-party opinions team servicing our growing APAC client base. The role will entail a broad regional focus on the Asia-Pacific market, including but not limited to China, Japan, Singapore and Korea, collaborating with underwriters and issuer clients (namely, corporations, development banks, sovereigns and municipalities).

This position is part of our global SFS leadership team, reporting to the Executive Director, Sustainable Finance Solutions, located in Toronto, Canada. In an innovative and fast-growing market, we are seeking a seasoned professional who brings a wealth of organizational, leadership and sustainable finance expertise to the second-party opinions team. The ideal candidate should have a strong leadership profile, a commercial and client-centric approach, experience in APAC markets, and thrive in a dynamic work environment.

Key responsibilities include managing a team of project managers and associates that executes and delivers credible and timely second-party opinions in line with evolving market expectations, engaging with issuers and underwriters on an ongoing basis. The candidate will be responsible for the team’s delivery of high-quality and timely opinions to clients and will represent us in the market externally to expand our leadership profile. The ability to communicate clearly at all levels, form strong relationships with stakeholders and proactively identify and manage risks is also essential in this role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Strategic leadership: lead a regional project team that can deliver upon its mandate in the organization and contribute to the strategic direction of this fast-growing business unit.
• Coaching and mentoring: support managers in their efforts to build high performing and motivated sub-teams. Oversee capacity building initiatives.
• Content Management: drive high quality research through ongoing training and development, internal reviews and sign-off. Develop expertise in Sustainalytics use of proceeds taxonomy.
• Cross Regional Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the SFS team across our global offices, to help strengthen our offering and ensure opportunities are managed efficiently.
• Client Support: Engage with issuers and underwriters as a valued source of insight on sustainable bonds
• Expertise development: Continuously strengthen knowledge of sustainable debt financing and develop related expertise across the team.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least 8-10+ years’ experience preferably in a research / consulting environment.
• Experience in financial markets or corporate consulting considered an asset.
• Master’s degree in related discipline (business, finance, sustainability, engineering).
• Fluency in English with strong oral and written communication skills.
• Fluency in additional languages considered an asset (eg. Mandarin, Japanese, Korean).
• Demonstrable understanding and experience in financial services and sustainable debt finance.
• Passion for sustainability and alignment with Sustainalytics’ mission, vision and values
• 5+ years’ experience with operational and people management.
• Client-centric and commercial approach.
• Strong project management and execution skills.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with ease and manage competing interests.

POSITION PURPOSE

As an exciting new role on the Sustainable Finance Solutions (SFS) team, the Taxonomy Manager will contribute to the expansion and implementation of the SFS taxonomy of eligible activities/assets for green, social and sustainable bonds. Given the rapid growth and sophistication of the sustainable bond market, taxonomies play a critical role in supporting the credibility and consistency of use of proceeds. The SFS taxonomy is a living document leveraging the insights and expertise gained by reviewing over 500 sustainability bond frameworks, while responding to timely industry initiatives, namely the EU Taxonomy and other regional variations.

Key elements of this new role will include: overseeing research across a number of environmental and social thematic areas to support and maintain the existing SFS taxonomy; delving into complex technical activities for sustainable use of proceeds and credible sustainability performance targets for sustainability-linked bonds; and ultimately supporting the development of a company-wide Sustainalytics taxonomy, serving various products and services. The taxonomy must remain robust, well documented, managed/updated in a systematic and timely manner (responding to market and technology developments), and well-supported in its application.

While the initial primary focus of the role will be on supporting the SFS Commercial and Projects teams in interpreting alignment of opportunities and projects with the SFS taxonomy, the Manager will ultimately be expected to manage a team of direct reports. As a thought leader in Sustainable Finance, the selected candidate will engage in external facing opportunities such as consultations and presentations, building the profile and credibility of the Sustainable Finance Solutions team in the market.

Key responsibilities:

• Assist in the management of a service/support team that provides timely and credible input to the SFS Commercial and Projects teams in determining the eligibility of the intended use of proceeds of issuer prospects and clients;
• Contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of the SFS Taxonomy to ensure that it remains up to date and aligned with market expectations and relevant international standards as they evolve;
• Contribute to the improvement of guidance and training on the Taxonomy;
• Represent the SFS team in external consultations, presentations and vis a vis clients and prospects;
• Track developments in sustainable debt financing, including current and emerging trends, issues, drivers, risks and opportunities, key players, best practices, the regulatory landscape, etc.; and
• Collaborate with colleagues across global teams and offices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• 6-8 years of related work experience (research and/or consulting);
• Knowledge of sustainable and responsible investment and debt capital markets;
• Technical expertise related to energy, carbon and/or industrial processes is an asset;
• Knowledge of international standards, taxonomies and regulatory initiatives relevant to sustainable finance;
• Client-centric and commercial approach;
• Degree(s) in related discipline (business, sustainability and/or engineering);
• Excellent English business writing skills;
• Extensive experience in people and project management;
• Expertise in analyzing sustainable assets, while balancing a critical and commercial approach;
