Function
Do you have a passion for crafting software applications that contribute to a better world? Would you like to participate in applied computer science research projects? We are looking for an eager R&D software developer in our team!
At Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, part of Wageningen University & Research, we are working to create sustainable solutions to provide better food for more people.
What will you do?
Together with other team members and external partners you develop the prototype applications to validate the research performed within Food Informatics. You will develop the software for research projects from design to implementation. When parts need to be outsourced, you can manage this process, keeping up to date on the progress achieved by our partners and adjusting priorities when necessary. You keep up with technological developments of frontend and backend frameworks. The Food Informatics group is an informal working environment with the freedom to organise your work and the expectation that you take your responsibility in reaching your goals.
In a nutshell you will:
  • develop and maintain the prototype software applications for our research projects;
  • be involved in each project from the early start to look for suitable technical solutions and to add maximum value to the customer and research questions of the projects;
  • connect to other software developers and researchers in our team and in the Wageningen University and Research (WUR) community to align best practices;
  • be able to work in agile and iterative projects in which we prototype solutions in sprints;
  • be able to carefully trade-off between quickly prototyping an application and sufficiently taking care of scalability, maintainability, and security.
The applied research group Food Informatics is using new and innovative digital techniques to make that happen!  Food Informatics is the domain that deals with digitising information from all parts of food production and consumption, combining data from various sources with expert knowledge to enable smart, new applications. In our research projects we make this information digitally available using (among others), rule-based systems, semantics, (no-)SQL databases, web-based UIs, machine learning, and other artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. Prototype software applications are created and made available for demonstration and verification. Examples are a decision support system for quality management of strawberries and a decision model that provides meal advice based on nutritional and health rules, taking into account personal characteristics and preferences. Website: www.wageningenur.nl/en/fbr.
Function Requirements
Who are you:
  • You have a BSc or MSc in computer science, information science, artificial intelligence, or a related discipline with a strong software development background and an affinity for agrifood;
  • you are experienced in using a structured approach for complex software engineering projects with an agile way of working;
  • you have experience in developing software in Java, using Spring and Hibernate;
  • you are experienced in using dependency and version management techniques (like Git, SVN, Maven, NPM, NVM, etc…);
  • you have knowledge of webserver configuration. Experience with Apache and Apache Tomcat is preferred;
  • knowledge of front-end technologies and frameworks (for instance HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Angular, Node.js, Vue.js, etc.) and setting up web-development environments is preferred;

Function
You are an enthusiastic post-doc researcher who wants to be part of the multidisciplinary Animal Sciences Sensor Development Team. This team includes a wide range of Animal-Sciences-Group (ASG) experts and a group of 4 dedicated “sensor” postdocs that will be working towards the next-generation sensors for animal sciences: you will be one of this postdoc group. The new sensor technologies will be developed from and applied to situations ranging from wild animals in nature to domestic animals in farm and lab situations.

Next Level Animal Sciences
The WUR Animal Sciences Group focuses on finding answers to major societal challenges, including those related to animal welfare, human and animal health, food security, climate change and biodiversity.
ASG has launched the ambitious innovation program Next Level Animal Sciences aimed at developing innovative and less-invasive next-generation methodologies to address the next decade challenges in our domain.
Three methodologies are central to the innovation program Next Level Animal Sciences:
1.      Complex cell systems for integrated studies at the interface of cell, tissue and organism.
2.      Integrated and autonomous sensor platforms for 'precision phenotyping' in relation to
         environmental conditions.
3.      Unravelling mechanisms in complex animal systems from complex data analysis and mechanistic
         modelling, at all integration levels.
The current postdoc position is part of theme two: integrated and autonomous sensor platforms.
The postdoc will support the project that will focus on:
  • The technical development of novel data processing and analytical platforms that allow the combination and integration of space/time information (track/trace), internal sensor data (e.g. blood hormone, heart rate or glucose levels) and external sensor data (e.g. temperature, acceleration, depth, and/or electric fields) or environmental (sound, chlorophyll, nutrients) sensor information of animals in their natural habitat and/or life stock. This makes use of existing tracking data and technology, as well as the sensors developed by the 3 other postdocs.
  • These data will then be used to develop novel automated behavioural pattern recognition tools, in close cooperation with the Animal Science “complex data analyses” methodology-initiative. These efforts may focus on a range of taxa, ranging from insects to fish, birds and mammals.
Function Requirements
We are looking for a high energy, dynamic, creative, promising investigator. The successful candidate will be an innovator and will work independently as well as in a team setting. Are you the person that is qualified to develop both step one (technical development of novel sensor platforms) and step 2 (automated behavioural pattern recognition)?. If you are qualified for one of the subjects we would encourage you to apply as well. We are looking forward to hear your ideas on this subject.
  • Knowledge of electronic sensor or tracking design and integration, applied to wild or captive animals
  • Analytical skills for organisation and interpretation of big-data, and developing algorithms
  • Proficient in relevant data science analytical software (e.g. Python, Matlab, R, C or C++)
  • Experience in interpreting time series data, performing statistics and machine learning, and visualising patterns, with regard to sensor or tracking technology
  • Work will be motly based in Wageningen
  • Excellent team player who is eager to work in a multi-disciplinary and collaborative research environment
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both speaking (incl. presenting) and writing in  minimal proficiency level CEFR C2. For more information about this proficiency level, please visit our special language page.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will of course receive a good salary. Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive salary of between € 2.790,- and € 5.127,- for a full-time working week of 38 hours, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale 10-11). We will develop and apply a set of sensors for the real-time monitoring of the physiological status of an individual organism. The resulting data will be used to feed a Digital Twin of the test organism that simulates energy allocations. Differences in energy allocation can be used in terms of optimizing growth, reproduction and resilience under different circumstances and after relevant perturbations.
